Meet Joseph Nelson: Owner Of Smooth Hollow Excavating, LLC

If you spend five minutes talking with Joseph Nelson, you will quickly notice something. He is not just someone who runs heavy equipment. He genuinely loves the work.

Joseph grew up in a small farm town where helping neighbors was simply how life worked. As a kid, he hauled hay, fixed fences, and pitched in wherever someone needed an extra set of hands. Hard work was not optional. It was normal.

His first experience with equipment came early. At just four years old, he climbed onto an old Ford tractor and started learning the basics. That moment stuck. From then on, machines, dirt, and building things from the ground up became second nature.

By the time he turned 21, Joseph was operating equipment full-time. Not long after, he was managing crews across two states. He led cleanup teams, ran landscape crews, and handled projects that demanded precision and leadership. Those years gave him hands-on experience, but they also showed him something else. Communities needed dependable contractors who cared about doing the job right.

In 2016, he decided to stop waiting for someone else to fill that gap. He started his own company and built it the way he believed it should be run. Honest work. Straight answers. No shortcuts.

That decision became Smooth Hollow Excavating, LLC.

Building a Company the Right Way

From day one, Joseph focused on quality and reliability over volume. He believed that if you show up when you say you will and do the work correctly the first time, people remember.

That approach worked.

Since starting the company, Smooth Hollow Excavating has completed:

Subdivisions

Custom home builds

Commercial construction projects

Utility installation and maintenance

Septic system work

Farmland water retention systems

NRCS supported agricultural projects

The team has helped design and build infrastructure for homeowners, farmers, and growing businesses throughout the region.

Every project starts the same way. Listen first. Then plan. Then build.

How Joseph Leads

Joseph is still very hands-on. You will often find him in the cab of an excavator, checking grades, or walking a site with a client. He believes the owner should be involved, not hidden behind a desk.

His leadership style is simple:

Do what you say you will do

Treat people fairly

Leave every job better than you found it

Keep learning and improving

He also believes growth comes from working with the right people. As he says, “The only option is growth, and to grow I need to find who can help me with the how. You guys are the who.”

That mindset keeps the company moving forward while staying grounded in service.

More Than Dirt Work

At the end of the day, Joseph sees excavation as more than moving soil. Every trench, foundation, and drainage line supports something bigger. A home. A business. A farm. A future.

That responsibility matters to him.

Smooth Hollow Excavating exists to help property owners build with confidence, knowing the ground beneath their project is solid and done right the first time.

And for Joseph Nelson, that is exactly how it should be.
